Looking for a quick getaway from Rome? Castle Gandolfo is a quick 50 min. drive from Rome.
Castle Gandolfo is Pope Francisco's summer home. Since we drove from Rome, we had to park our car. Make sure to bring coins for the parking meter. Only coins are accepted in the machines. There is not a lot parking so be patient.
Pontiff Palace
The Papal Palace of Castle Gandolfo, or the Apostolic Palace of castle Gandolfo is a 135 acre complex of buildings in a garden setting in the city of Castle Gandolfo, Italy. The main structure, the Papal Palace, has been a museum since October 2016. It served for centuries as a summer residence of the vacation retreat for the Pope, the leader of the Catholic Church. The Palace overlooks the Lake Albano.
Here are some pictures of our time at the museum
and Barbalini Gardens.
The gardens are absolutely dreamy. Filled with fountains, lush gardens and even a few animals.
After touring the gardens we stepped into the Popes private residence. Part museum and part apartment. You can experience history and breathtaking art.
Pope's bedroom when he stays here.
After our tour visit to the museum and gardens we stopped for an appretivo and people watched until it was time for dinner.

Where to Eat? Since we are officially foodies, we ate at both Fa.Lu. Cioli and Hosteria. I highly recommend both! At Fa Lu Cioli we had their famous porchetta sandwich. I added mozzarella and bell peppers. So good! A must try when in the area. The porchetta was fresh and perfectly cooked. We got our to-go and sat outside. |

They also have other item on their menu. Everything looks delicious. |

Fresh Porchetta, Ive heard this is the best place in town for Porchetta. |
Next stop... Hosteria for Dinner.
Be sure to make reservations before arriving. There was an hour wait for us. First we ordered a glass of wine. I ordered the carbonara for dinner. My mouth is watering just thinking about the carbonara. Husband ordered the Tonnarelli All Gricia. Both dishes were good and were reasonably priced for the value.

Lake Albano-
Lake Albano is a small volcanic crater lake in the Alban hills of Lazio. Castle Ganolfo, is overlooking the lake. Stunning lake, and the perfect backdrop for a stunning day trip.
It looks so pretty!
